Case Study

Client: University of Bath
Project: Claverton Campus
Services: Topographical / Buried Utility / Laser Scan / BIM Modelling

The Brief

We were appointed by the University of Bath to undertake large scale mapping of the campus in multiple stages to support continuous asset maintenance work streams and new infrastructure development. This included:

  1. Control Network Surveys
  2. Topographical Surveys
  3. Buried Utility Surveys
  4. Laser Scan and Measured Building Surveys (of buildings of interest)
  5. Structural and Architectural Modelling (of buildings of interest)

Our Approach

Due to the size of the campus, it was necessary to establish a site-wide primary control network related to Ordnance Survey grid and datum. This was achieved through the use of a static GNSS and verified by adjusted closed-loop traverse.

From this primary control network, secondary control networks were established around the individual survey areas. Data was then collected systematically by robotic total station, RTK GNSS, scanners, detectors, GPR etc. As each survey area was completed it was processed, drafted, reviewed and verified providing a staged delivery to work with the client’s budget and delivery schedule.

Conclusion

All elements of the survey were delivered on time and to the required accuracies and specifications. We continue to work with the University of Bath, who are themselves constantly expanding and redeveloping. Our assured approach and established values combined with the ability to maintain flexible work schedules and call on the most up to date equipment remains key to our ability to satisfy our clients’ demands.

Client Comment

“Before commencing this large and complex Topographical and Buried Utilities survey project across our Campus that’s in excess of 200 Acres it was critical for us to find a supplier that could provide quality and consistency of the data and service delivery over a long period of time to ensure the project was successful. Finding a local Company to work with was a bonus but a valuable ingredient. Over the last 2 years that we have been working with Fairfield Banks we have established a very good working relationship. Mike and his team consistently provide a professional, attentive service producing high quality survey information and they have always responded promptly and positively to changes to our business priorities. Fairfield banks have also carried out other types of surveys for us to support our construction projects. We would happily recommend Fairfield Banks surveying services and look forward to continuing our ongoing work with them in the future.” James Le Grys, Asset/BIM Manager, University of Bath
